My fiancé, A, was admitted to the NGHS Oncology Unit. For 3 years she battled breast cancer that had metastasized to other parts of her body. We had Mary Smith for 6 of the days we were there. Mary was not only a nurse to A but she was also like a mother, during the time A had been in the hospital, she needed a mother figure and there was Mary. Mary was always prepared, knowledgeable, and she always had a smile that was so contagious. I could be having a really bad day and would leave the room and there she was, just waiting to give a hug or offer her shoulder to cry on.
Some of the things that amazed me about her were during the snow days she stayed at the Holiday Inn near the hospital just to ensure she would be able to make it back to work for her next shift. A's platelet counts were at an all-time low and Mary was always on top of it in making sure that the blood bank had A's blood type O Negative. She would call the day before just to make certain that we were not waiting around for platelets and made sure everything was ready to go, just in case we needed it.
Mary puts her patients first and foremost!
I am a firm believer that Mary was placed in our lives at this time, as A's journey with cancer was close to coming to an end, because she has been there to support and guide me on what was to come. Mary had not only been A's nurse but she truly became my saving grace. Without Mary, I do not think that A would have been here as long as she was; she gave me more days with A and for that I will always be grateful!
Mary is truly an amazing person that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Mary should be recognized for her outstanding service that she has given not only to A but to me as well. We truly fell in love with this incredible lady!
