Last week we had a patient who gave new meaning to the word anxiety. She was new to chemo and though she has some education previously at a hospital in Carson, she was extremely anxious about starting chemotherapy. We even got calls from the physician's office explaining the patients' situation.
Jessie was her nurse that day and did an incredible job. Her patience with the patient was exceptional. She took extra time with her to explain each step she was doing. She went through the chemo education program to insure the patient had all the information she needed. We were able to divert one of Jessie's other patient's to another nurse because this patient needed so much attention.
The patient's daughters were with her and at times added to the anxiety expecting her to have immediate reactions. Jessie had the patience of Job with this family. She was so caring and considerate of all their concerns and took the time to sit with the family and fully be present in the moment. She did all she could to anticipate and do all that was needed that could help them through treatment.
The patient completed treatment and wanted to have Jessie again on her next visit, a sure sign of bonding and confidence in her care. Jessie was exceptional in her dealings with the patient and her family. She explained what each step entailed, why we do what we do and with a strong drive to educating them to dispel their fears.
