I am a pediatric RN at a local hospital. After working a Christmas Eve hospital shift this year. I went home to the worst night of my life. My parents informed my sister and me that our Dad was diagnosed that afternoon with leukemia. The day after Christmas, my family brought my dad to 8PW to begin his month long induction period of chemo. As a nurse, I see sick children every day, but there's nothing that can prepare you for seeing you own father get sick. Leaving him the first night I could see the anxiety he was stricken over with.
My father is a man that never has been in the hospital before, he had no idea what journey he was about to embark on. His face fell pale as a ghost after speaking with the APN about his treatment plan. However, Beth was his admitting nurse that night and went above and beyond to care for my dad. She spoke to my mother, sister, and me privately before leaving and reassured us that he would be in good hands and she would speak with him to help him relax. She spent that night getting to know my dad, making him comfortable, and for that we are thankful.
One week later my dad experienced what he calls his "Hell week". He was starting to spike fevers and one night he went all the way up to 105 degrees. Within seconds, Sue marched into his room with a handful of help and got my dad on a cooling blanket to break his fever quickly. She was in his room that night busy drawing blood and giving us updates at home. She supported him when we were at home and unable to physically be there with him.
I know that it is our job to care and treat our patients. Although, these two nurses, have demonstrated such compassion and extraordinary care. They have been knowledgeable and educated my dad about what to expect along the way, which has been extremely helpful to him. They are never too busy for a quick update about my dad when we call. They answer all our questions and provide us with endless support. Most importantly, they honestly care for my dad and his health. Trusting your loved one in someone else's arms is extremely hard to do. However, when my dad is in the care of Sue or Beth I know that I do not have to worry. There is no better feeling in the world than seeing my dad's progress and knowing that he was able to get through this induction period because of how strong and brave he was. We owe Beth and Sue for giving him the courage and tools to overcome chemo and every obstacle that was thrown his way.
I have nothing but great things to say about everyone on 8PW, but Beth and Sue must be recognized for the amazing nursing care they provide to not only my father but to my whole family as well. I hope that I make the same difference to someone as they have for us!
