Joan delivers exceptional service by making discharge phone calls to our Spanish speaking patients checking on how they are doing and soliciting ways we can improve our care and gathering recognition for staff members by finding out specific things they did to make the patient's stay memorable in a positive way. These phone calls have helped to identify areas where our care of the patient and/or family could improve for the future.
Joan helped plan a holiday party for our team/staff and invited our residents to participate, coordinated to food and then did this again for a retirement party for one of our staff members. She is one of the greatest cheerleaders for our team and served as a survey ambassador last year getting 100% participation by the 4th day of the survey of 56 team members.
Her passion, smile, and cheerful attitude lift our spirits and there is never a bad day when she is on the unit. She also helped make our supply room nurse-friendly by reorganizing the storeroom and saving time for all nurses who need to gather supplies for patient care.
***
Joan had a patient who was admitted and she did not improve and in fact got worse the following day. She kept up on her MEWS scores and when I went to talk with her about the changes she was very well informed on her patient and was able to tell me what she had already done to activate her resources. She had repeated her vital signs so the change in MEWS scores were up to date (from 4 to 8), she informed her team leader, and had called the physician. What an outstanding example of excellent nursing care on your floor. She was very helpful in gathering data and knowing that she needed to escalate the change in condition.
