Prior to my becoming a nurse, Sis Haynes changed the whole course of my life. I remember feeling so terrible for days in my second trimester of pregnancy. My doctor scheduled me to see a high risk OB/GYN at a facility outside my community. While at this high risk doctor's office, I kept feeling worse and worse. I could hardly hold my head up, and the thought of even being sent home from there was scary. Eventually, I was sent home. Approximately an hour after being home, things took a turn for the worst. I started to bleed. As my world was turning into a tunnel, I stopped and wondered if I would even make the 4 minute ride to Rumford Hospital.
I did survive, although I was unable to stand or to comprehend. I do remember, however, Sis Haynes coming into the room and never leaving my side. She was able to take charge of the situation while still explaining what was going on. As she stayed in the room until Life Flight came to take me to Maine Medical Center, she maintained small talk to keep me calm. Even though I was losing my baby, she was able to speak to the reasons to maintain a love for life without minimizing my loss.
I ended up very sick and on a ventilator for 10 days secondary to septic shock. Although, I was already enrolled in nursing school, this fine nurse and her actions, help to frame what kind of nurse that I knew I wanted to grow into. She holds a key in my ability to take charge as a nurse and how to instill hope in those going through quite possibly the worst moments of life. Thank you, Sis for your gift each and every day.
