Our patient had a negative reaction to his medication. He repeatedly explained his reactions and symptoms to every nurse; he was left feeling that no one actually "heard him". He was unable to tolerate oral medications. He was losing weight and getting weaker every day. His drug reactions continue to worsen.
The patient wrote about Marie Excellent and her ability to "listen" as he reviewed his drug reaction with her. Marie stopped, listened, discussed and planned a course of action with the patient. He nominated Marie for the DAISY Award because her caring listening stood out above all other healthcare workers. He recognized that Marie's ability to listen was part of a bigger caring behavior that made him feel more comfortable.
Once Marie and her patient developed and implemented the Patient Focused Plan of Care, he started to see improvement and was finally discharged. Marie's care for him allowed the patient to recover faster!
