I had just returned from lunch and the unit clerk caught me and said there was a patient who called and said she really wanted to visit with me about her care. I took the number and gave her a call. She told me all the nurses in the ICU provided her great care but one RN stood out above the rest. She told me how Leah Haug was very kind, patient, and respectful with her. She explained how Leah always answered her call light quickly and never passed judgement on her as she said she felt embarrassed. She explained Leah always took time to explain all procedures, cares and medications in a way the patient could easily understand. She asked how she could recognize Leah for all her great care. It took me a minute to think and I remembered the DAISY nomination form. At first while I was getting her address to mail her a nomination form, I remembered they were online. She stated she had an email address and I told her I would email her a link to fill out the nomination and emailed it to her while I was visiting with her. I checked and the patient had completed the form for Leah and sent it in five minutes after I had emailed it to her to thank Leah for her wonderful care.
The patient's nomination said: "I was losing a lot of blood after a simple heart stent procedure and not one time did she wrinkle her nose. As soon as I pressed the button she was right there. Leah explained every pill and every procedure. She took the time and definitely the effort."
