My father was admitted for a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. Post-operative he was transferred to 3EIMC. My dad had a few complications after surgery including rapid atrial fibrillation, CHF, and delirium. I stayed with him overnight and he was very confused and restless.
Emily Hull was his night nurse 3 nights in a row. She did an exceptional job caring for my dad. Her assessments were perfect and she noticed immediately when he started to wheeze and called the doctor right away for a Lasix order. She closely monitored his urine output and when she felt he didn't diuresis enough she called for more Lasix and a breathing treatment. Her nursing skills were so exceptional I was shocked when she told me she had been off orientation only 4 weeks. I would have never guessed! She exhibited excellent critical thinking skills. I heard her give report to the day nurse and I was so impressed. I felt like I was listening to a seasoned ICU nurse report. She gave details of what had occurred with my dad since admission.
Aside from what I have already said, the care and compassion she showed for my dad while he was delirious were incredible. She recognized how to keep him calm and cooperate. She spoke in such a kind calm tone. When my dad would get upset and combative she would say, "J, hey it's me, Emily, remember, I am your nurse." And he would settle right down. If she ever got frustrated with my dad, she never once showed it. I cannot say enough about the care she gave my dad.
