Kiri Ransom is a highly skilled, knowledgeable and dedicated nurse. On a continual basis, Kiri gives every single patient on the PCU her 100%. When Kiri is at work, her focus is on patient care to the point that her work distracts her from any life stressors from outside of the hospital. The story that I have to tell today is just one of many that demonstrate how Kiri exemplifies the spirit of nursing.
It was a night that started out like any other - busy, but not unmanageable. During my initial assessments on one of my patients, I discovered that he was retaining urine. It became obvious that a Foley catheter would be needed. Orders were obtained, and I attempted the procedure but was unable to advance the catheter past the prostate. I then contacted Kiri who was the charge nurse for the shift to assist in the procedure. Not only did Kiri attempt the catheterization herself, she remained with me at the patient's side for the next three hours as we worked with the hospitalist and eventually a urologist who at midnight came in from home and placed a 3-way Foley in the patient.
This is but one story about the dedication to quality, safe patient care that Kiri brings to work with her every day. The level of discipline that she has to remain focused on a patient or aspect of patient care for hours at a time if needed.
In addition to being fantastic at the bedside, Kiri is wonderful for the morale of the team that is working on any given night. Kiri maintains a positive "we can do this" attitude that is respected by every member of the team. Even on nights that she is not designated or official charge nurse, Kiri is a leader that the staff can, and do turn to when they have questions or need assistance.
Kiri is a true DAISY Nurse!
