My granddaughter had spinal disc replacement surgery. She is only 21 years old. This was a frightening time for us all. After the surgery, she was sent to ICU where we met Brittany. She was efficient, kind and gracious, finding enough seats for us and offering coffee or water. She checked in on us often. I explained that I was staying the night and she located a chair for me to sleep in. When it did not fit through the doorway, she went to another floor to find something more suitable. She remained good-natured throughout that inconvenience. It stormed that night and the power went out briefly before the generator started up. Within seconds, she was at the door checking on my granddaughter. When my granddaughter started requesting assistance to urinate often, Brittany relied on her nursing skills of assessment and problem solving to determine that my granddaughter was not fully emptying her bladder and needed to be straight cathed. Brittany performed that task with skill and compassion for my granddaughter's young age. My granddaughter stated, "whenever I put my call light on, she was there right away. I really like that." It was very reassuring to a young person having such a serious, frightening surgery. I too am a registered nurse and know the difference between ordinary and extraordinary.
