I would like to express the exemplary nursing care that was done by one of my co-workers. We had a situation on our Unit (Labor and Delivery) with a 26-week pregnant patient who was possibly ruptured, however, she was dilated to 4cm. Plans were made to transfer the patient to a nearby tertiary center for a higher level of care. Upon re-examination prior to transfer, it was discovered that the patient was not stable for transfer due to cervical advancement. A bedside ultrasound was performed by her physician, which showed the infant was in a transverse lie. A decision was made to perform a cesarean section. Margie Egan was the nurse for this patient when she initially arrived at the unit. Margie was due to go home at 1900. After giving report to the SCU in anticipation of the delivery, Margie knew the severity of the situation and was aware that there were two "newer" nurses working in SCU and did not want them to feel alone. Without hesitation, Margie stated she was going to stay past her shift and make sure everything was okay with the baby. Margie went back to the OR to assist the Neonatal team in providing care for this extremely premature infant. Margie has extensive past experience in SCU. Margie stepped into the neonatal role, performed her duties and did not once panic at the thought of a 26-week delivery. Margie was crucial in the resuscitation/intubation of the infant. Because of Margie's knowledge of the situation and ability to perform the necessary duties, this infant was stable enough for transfer to the University of Chicago for a higher level of care.
We are all so grateful for Margie's help and expertise. Margie always goes above and beyond without hesitation to help out in any situation. She is one of the most humble people I know and we could not be luckier to have a co-worker and mentor like Margie!
