Caitlin rose to the top the night before our precious mom passed away. As family gathered, Mom's room quickly filled to overflowing with folding chairs and people. Some sat on the floor, blocking the bathroom door, while others squeezed together, sharing seats. Caitlin was on duty. She popped in and out of Mom's room, often, along with the CNAs. They were all amazing. But, it wasn't just our family who was struggling that night, as Mom lay, dying. Her sweet roommate sat on the other side of the drawn curtain, listening, stressed and hurting. Finally, I asked if there was any possible way we could be moved to a larger, private space, for the sake of all of us. Caitlin had compassion and cared. Not only about her patient, but about our entire family. In short order, she cleared things with her supervisor and made it happen. We were grateful beyond words. Whatever we needed that night, she parted the waters. Being with a loved one in their final hours is a very intimate, personal time for a family. Caitlin understood that. Her kindness and excellence in nursing will long be remembered.
