My wife, C, is an extremely complex Banner-University Patient. She has 19 different medical presentations; 17 different medical specialists; and 31 different medications.
One day C awoke at home with extreme chest and jaw pains that radiated to her back, ribs and abdominal area. She was transported by ambulance to BUMC South ED, where she was stabilized, provided with comprehensive labs and tests, then admitted for further observation and continued care.
Sam MWangi, RN greeted us with a rare passion and professionalism that gave us complete assurance that C's continuity of care would be provided. In the next 4 hours, it was readily apparent that Sam exhibited Banner's Health core values of "Disciplined Focus" and "Obsessed" Patient Care. His care was so exceptional that our request was honored and Sam was reassigned as our Duty Nurse the next morning until discharge that afternoon. Nurse MWangi continued to interact with us through active listening and completely adapting C's care to complex and changing physician orders. Sam's interaction, active listening, passion for patient care, and dedication to nursing made a "meaningful difference" in C's care at Banner University 4 South.
Nurse MWangi is an outstanding example of an Extraordinary Nurse.
