Christina Keilis a Nurse who shows empathy toward patients that not every nurse shows. She is very professional and sympathetic to patients and families. She treats everyone, patients, families, and staff, with the utmost respect. Even though she is a younger, newer nurse, she shows more empathy and has more patience with difficult patient situations than nurses with years of experience.
I have been a registered nurse for over 26 years and few nurses I have encountered over the last few years shows the energy, time, attention to details and communication skills that Christina portrays as an Oncology Nurse. I worked with Christina this past week and weekend on the Oncology inpatient unit. I was the Nurse Practitioner taking care of a patient and she was the RN assigned to him. She took more time in figuring out his complex medical issues and problem solved with brainstorming on how to best take care of him. She was excellent in her communication skills with him, his family and the entire medical team and support teams of his.
Christina was taking care of a 19-year-old male patient, with relapsed, refractory leukemia, that had a history of drug abuse. With his relapsed leukemia, he had terrible generalized pain related to his uncontrolled disease. He ultimately was breaking into his PICC line to try to inject substances that were not prescribed to be used in that way. He received a blood infection related to this. She remained calm during all interactions with him. I was impressed with how she remained non-judgmental of this patient who was close to her own age. She remained professional and displayed actions that all CCHMC employees should do and be.
Christina provided a safe environment for a drug-addicted oncology patient she was caring for. While giving his narcotic pain medication, she remained in his room while the infusion was running until it was completed. He needed to use the bathroom and attempted to manipulate the syringe to give himself a bolus injection instead of letting the IV pump run. Christine promptly and professionally, in an empathic way, helped the patient back to the bed and replaced the syringe to continue the slow infusion. She was clear in her communication with the patient, along with the care team on what had occurred. Her thorough unbiased documentation of the event helped determine the future course of his care.
I would be very comfortable if Christina were the Registered Nurse for my own children, husband, myself or anyone in my family. Her professionalism, empathy, unbiased treatment, compassion, and knowledge sets her apart and above other nurses today. CCHMC is lucky to have an employee like Christina.
