During a shift that I had worked with Tracy, there was a patient who was very sick, and the family had ultimately decided to provide comfort measures (to stop all radical treatments), so the patient may rest peacefully. Tracy, being the selfless and caring nurse that she is, made herself accountable for the well-being of, not only the patient, but also of the family. From across the unit, I could see the family invoking their complete trust in her with regards to the care of their mother. She was consistently at the bedside, ensuring that the patient was as comfortable as she could be and asking the family if they needed anything.
Tracy even went above and beyond to stay past her shift, so that she could be a comforting presence to the family. This is not the first and only time Tracy has exemplified what nursing truly means. This very event helped to reinforce my passion for the profession. Being an experienced nurse, it gives me hope and a breath of fresh air that new nurses like Tracy instill compassionate care into their daily practice.
