Jill is a very compassionate nurse who is continuously advocating for her patients. I was able to witness Jill use her expertise and skills to communicate with a patient who was essentially having a procedure because she didn't want to disappoint her family. From the initial interaction, Jill defined what it means to be a patient advocate. Jill immediately built a rapport and trust with this patient. The patient was afraid she was going to die if she had the procedure done. Jill then discussed with the doctor the patient's concerns and fears, leading to the patient's procedure being canceled and the possibility of an unnecessary poor outcome. Jill recognized very quickly that no matter what the outcome of the procedure was that there would be no change in how the patient would be managed regardless of the results. Upon arrival back to the patient's room, Jill helped facilitate the conversation between the patient and daughter so that there was understanding from both sides on the plan of care. "Are you mad?" asked the patient to her daughter. "Why would I be mad, mom? It's your choice and I support you", replied the daughter. It took Jill to help her daughter realize that at the end of life we have to make hard choices and sometimes doing nothing is the right answer. Jill will always advocate for patients. Ultimately, what Jill accomplished in the short time with this patient may have altered the quality of the rest of her life for the better.
