My charge nurse, Kai Whitmire, has been my mentor since the first day I worked with her. I would like to tell you of a time she went above and beyond CHRISTUS mission and values, but it is literally every day. I could tell you of the time she helped me assess and care for my patient who came back from CT lethargic and with low oxygen saturation. How she comforted my patient's terrified husband in the hallway as I tended to the patient. I could talk about the time she helped me insert a difficult foley in a patient with an enlarged prostate on a really busy shift. She used her experience and taught me useful tricks for a difficult foley all while comforting my patient and walking him through the discomfort.
Or how she always puts my charts together when I'm slammed because little things like that are a big help. See, Kai goes above and beyond every day for every patient, not just hers. Her work shows compassion for her patients, for your patients, and for you. She looks out for her nurses and is always there to help, even if she gets behind herself.
Galatians 6:2 "Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ". Yes, she definitely works to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Your problem is Kai's problem. And if it means staying over to solve it, she will. By teaching me and answering my every question with a smile, she aids in creating me not into a good nurse but an excellent nurse. The kind of nurse I want to be. I will always carry the selflessness and compassion she has shown me and one day I hope to be to a new nurse, what she is to me.
