Melanie always took care of me even when I wasn't her patient. She was often in charge and made sure that I had top-of-the-line excellent care. I had some major complications following what was supposed to be an outpatient surgery. I ended up getting an ileostomy which made me temporarily lose my large intestine. I couldn't eat anything for nearly 30 days. I could only drink clear fluids and would drink Gatorade otherwise I'd get awful muscle cramps from my electrolytes being out of balance.
One day my parents bought me a different type of sports drink. For whatever reason, it made me incredibly sick. I can't stress just how horrible my GI system was at this point. Melanie took excellent care of me, giving me meds and cleaning up my mess. She knew that normally I never had any issues with Gatorade. Unfortunately, the hospital didn't have any in their cafeteria or gift shop. The next morning Melanie brought me in some Gatorade. She left her house early that morning to stop on her way into work.
When you work 12-hour shifts (that really are more like 13-14 hour shifts once you get/give reports and finish your charting) the time between shifts is very limited. She sacrificed some much-deserved sleep just to stop and get me some Gatorade. I was so touched by her compassion. I want to say thank you. It was one small act of kindness, but I know that she does those little things all the time. That's who she is. Melanie is a true DAISY Nurse.
