A two-year-old was brought to our ED after being found unresponsive in the family pool. The toddler did expire. Two days after the ER visit, the family of the toddler wrote a beautiful letter to Rebecca McHugh, thanking her for her kindness during their recent loss. The letter stated:
"The compassion you showed that night made a devastating night just a little less awful. You offered chairs, drinks, and blankets. You checked on us multiple times to see if we needed anything. We will forever remember your kindness. Thank you for all you did for us that night."
I felt that this was what the DAISY Award stands for, compassionate care. As the CNO in the facility, I called the Mom to explain the DAISY Award and concept to her. She nominated Rebecca immediately. She also came to the DAISY Award Ceremony despite the emotions she was feeling. She was able to thank Rebecca in person; this was a very emotional moment for them both.
