Recently I had a younger male patient under my care who woke up in the Recovery Room after surgery. His first request was to ask for his original nurse, Sharon Lynch. He elaborated she was his original nurse he had prior to his surgery. He stated he was rather apprehensive and afraid prior to this surgery due to the fact he had never undergone such a procedure before. He further stated that Sharon took the time to assure him the procedure was routine and further explained that he was in very capable hands.
This in itself showed compassion and empathy on Sharon's part which I felt was going above and beyond the required care. Sharon's instructions to her young patient were above requirements when she explained what the surgery was, what the surgery entailed, the post?operative procedures her patient could expect in the future. Because of Sharon's outstanding compassion toward this young man, he wanted to thank Sharon for her comforting manner in assuring him during this awkward time for him.
