Kate has worked within the Mercy system for 10 years. She has worked inpatient, in IR, Express Care, and now at Mercy Gastro. Kate is one of the best nurses I have ever worked with and I feel she should be recognized for clinically excellent and compassionate care.
The past week, we had an elderly patient on our unit who was admitted with a GI Bleed and she needed a colonoscopy. Her elderly husband, who had some early dementia, accompanied her to the ED and stayed with her overnight on our unit. This couple's love for one another was adorable and inspiring. The patient was prepped for her colonoscopy and went to Endo for the procedure late in the afternoon. The entire time the patient was gone, the husband expressed being very worried about his wife and said, "I just love her so much, I hope everything goes okay." The patient had been gone a little longer than expected, which made the husband even more nervous. I reassured him the patient was in good hands, but also called the Endo department to get an update. They said the patient was in the procedure and doing just fine. Once I found out that Kate was the nurse with the patient, I assured the husband again that his wife was in good hands.
When the patient returned from the procedure with her nurse, Kate, she could not say enough about the care she had received while she was having her procedure. She said over and over how great Kate and been with her and that she couldn't imagine having a "better nurse" during that procedure, and that Kate was, "meant to be a nurse and meant to do that kind of work" and that, "she never left my side and made me feel so comfortable and cared for during my test." She said she received great care from everyone, but Kate was really an exceptional nurse. The patient and her husband were both so happy to see each other when the patient got back from the test and both were very relieved the test was completed!
This is just one small example of the exceptional care Kate provides to her patients and I really think she should be recognized for her commitment to providing compassionate and excellent care to all of her patients.
