My husband was a recent patient on Oncology for six days. There were many wonderful staff members. However, one nurse was an extraordinary stand out due to her compassionate care and respectful handling of my husband's needs. He has not been hospitalized for many years and is normally an active person. This sudden onset illness was very difficult for him to cope with. Katie showed great maturity and insight when interacting with him. She truly saw him as a person and not just a patient. On her day off she called a coworker to ask me what might be a treat for him. She bought him a milkshake and visited for a while. He opened up to her and shared his feelings. It was a beautiful moment. This is what "living out our values" means.
