Courtney is such a pure example of the spirit of caring. She is a blessing to our team on ortho trauma progressive for countless reasons, far beyond just her nursing skill set. She is a team player, a critical thinker, an incredibly hard worker, a skilled communicator...I could go on.
I would like to nominate Courtney for a DAISY Award for staying long after her shift was over to help one of her patients file for unemployment online. This sweet, elderly lady had sustained a traumatic orthopedic injury and was needing to file in order to pay her rent to keep her home. Courtney became aware of this because the patient had been trying to contact her friends via phone to try to find some help.
Courtney volunteered immediately and told the patient that after her shift she would help her....and she did just that. This really blew me away. Helping our patient with this was as valuable as getting her health back on track. I can't imagine a more hopeless feeling than being discharged and no longer having a home to go. Yet, this is so above and beyond any expectation of the bedside nurse. Courtney's true desire to help those during their greatest need is amazing to me.
I have the pleasure of working as Courtney's clinical supervisor on ortho trauma progressive. I have watched Courtney work her way through nursing school as a tech on our unit. She has overcome some pretty incredible obstacles; yet still remains one of our highest performers. She is an inspiration to me, and I hope I am blessed to watch her continued growth as a nurse.
