Five years ago my first son was born. His delivery was chaotic and stressful. His oxygen levels and heart rate dropped multiple times. In the days that followed my husband felt that there was something just not right with the way my son was twitching and jerking. But the doctors swore it was just his immature nervous system. The second night in the hospital, Jan was our nurse. She came in to check on our new baby and took him to the nursery to check his circumcision before his feeding. 30 minutes later she was not back, as my husband was about to go check to see if everything was okay, she came back in to let us know she had sent him down to the NICU for a few things that concerned her. Bottom line, she saved his life! They found that he had suffered a stroke in utero during delivery and has 3 blood clots in his brain. The shaking and jerking that my husband noticed were seizures that his body was having. If Jan had not sent him to the NICU that night, he would have gone home and who knows what the outcome would have been. We owe our wonderful healthy 5-year-old to Jan's intuition that night!
