I needed a good day and Christina was a big part of the best day in the NICU. My son was born via c-section at BUMCP. I only got to hold my baby for a short time before the doctors realized that he looked blue and needed oxygen, which turned into Tetrology of Fallot with moderate to severe pulmonary artery stenosis. We were separated.
Then, we were told he needed heart surgery and he would be transferred to Cardon's. He needed to be intubated because he had apnea episodes. All his other organs needed to be checked and genetic tests run- all of which sounded extra scary!
All the scary news and I hadn't even held my baby while healing from the c-section, the shock of everything was too much. Lots of tears and sadness.
Finally, we were able to remove his breathing tube on Christina's shift. He was agitated and crying inconsolably. She then went to get a lounge chair and pillows. She wrapped him up very carefully as to not disturb all of his lines and placed him in my arms for the first time since his diagnosis!
I had asked if I could hold him before but because of his condition, I hadn't been able to. The fact that Christina realized that he and I both needed this small act was everything to me. He was able to relax in my arms and settle down. My heart had a moment of pure joy that was very much needed. Thank you, Christina! Today was a good day because of you!
