Recently, a nurse who felt less experienced and uncomfortable with a particular patient population, was caring for a patient with an unfamiliar artificial airway. The nurse also felt that some communication she had with the covering surgical service was less than ideal. Keila, in a very supportive and professional way, coached this nurse not only through the care of the patient, specifically the care of the artificial airway, but through the emotional part of the conversations and events that had transpired.
Keila is truly an asset to our hospital and I enjoy sharing mutual patients with her. I feel she tailors communication so effectively and offers such a clear and concise message to staff, patients, and families that she is an excellent role model for the other nurses on the floor. She must be complimented, not only for what she did for the above nurse, but for her strong inter-professional communication, her role as relentless patient advocate, and her consistent displays of teamwork.
