Recently, we responded to a very tragic event on the Labor and Delivery floor. A mother in labor, with her husband at her side, suddenly and very unexpectedly arrested. A code was called and the STAT RN team responded. The baby was immediately removed via C-section and taken from the room and a very lengthy resuscitative effort ensued.
Three of the STAT team and many of the unit nurses and physicians were in the room working the code when Jodi Hall, ASN, RN, a STAT RN, arrived to find the patient's husband sitting in a chair in the hallway alone. She found a room to move him to so that he didn't have to be witness to the very traumatic resuscitation of his wife and sat with him throughout the code, telling him "there's nothing I can say to make you feel better, so I'm just gonna sit here with you. I'm here." She listened and talked with him when he wanted to talk, and sat silent with him when he didn't.
Resuscitative efforts failed, and tragically we lost this young wife that never got a chance to be a mother. Jodi is a very compassionate and caring person, and she was the exactly the right person to be there for this man that day. The next day he asked who she was and wanted to talk to her. She went to visit him and his new baby in the NICU and he told her he didn't think he would have gotten through it if it wasn't for her.
She made a big difference that day and we are very proud to have her on our team.
