I was able to have Patricia Smith as my preceptor and was blessed because of it. Not only was I saved as a nurse but I was able to learn what a nurse is truly supposed to be. I was at a point in my career where I was not sure I was doing what I was supposed to be and thinking about leaving the nursing profession all together. Working with Patricia made me realize what nursing really is.
Patricia goes above and beyond for her patients, doing things most people wouldn't. She is extremely caring as well. It is nothing to see her walk into a patient's room and the patient becomes a different person. She is able to make people comfortable by just a simple look. She connects with patients in ways most are unable. I have watched her at times where most of us are just thinking about going home, such as change of shift, and she's the one that doesn't care about herself she's is making sure her patients don't need anything. She is the nurse that makes sure her patients have a pitcher of water, or sheets are clean.
It does not matter how busy she is she is never too busy to do the little things for her patients. You would never know she does the things she does if you were not paying attention because she does not do them for anyone but her patients. She does not care about being seen by her co-workers as anything special, because she does not think it is special, but she is amazing.
She's the nurse not only you want to have taking care of you, but the nurse you want to be. This is why I nominate Patricia Smith RN for the DAISY Award.
