In my career, I have only seen a few nurses with the drive and energy that Mandy displays on a daily basis. When I walked in the doors two years ago, Mandy was working as a night shift supervisor, transitioned to covering two busy units for the night shift, while orienting new supervisors, then moved to the day shift supervisor position. She had taken the lead role of the supervisor group, mentoring and guiding others to be successful in the role. Having high expectations of herself, she also had high expectations of her team, whether it was other supervisors or the bedside team. Mandy was determined to make a difference and have everyone on the unit be engaged and excited about their jobs, while making smart clinical decisions.

After Mandy's shift was over on the night shift, she would often stop in and see me with many questions, whether it was asking why we do things the way we do, providing other ideas or just asking questions to learn more. She was like a sponge, absorbing everything I said, and she put this knowledge to use, making our unit stronger. Mandy had a passion for teaching her team to make them better nurses and PCAs, holding them accountable to the job that needed done. When the opportunity came available for Mandy to become the clinician for all three telemetry units, and she expressed interest, I fully supported her decision.

While saddened to lose her as a supervisor, I knew the trade off of having her as our clinician would serve the units well. Mandy is internally motivated and will often bring things to me for my review saying, I saw we had a need to educate the team on XYZ, here is what I would like to do. This is exactly what a clinician is needed for; to know her team, know their strengths and weaknesses, and have the ability to produce the education with little to no guidance and direction. Mandy is very strong clinically and our new graduate nurses have thrived under her mentorship and support.
