...I was caring for that was admitted to the hospital for a fall at home he sustained due to alcohol intoxication. The patient was actively detoxing, becoming agitated, and wanted to go home. The patient wasn't being aggressive towards staff but was getting out of bed and starting to attempt to get dressed. Some nurses suggested I call Security immediately. Patricia was in charge and asked them not to call Security. She went into the room and was extremely kind to this patient, trying to diffuse the situation by speaking calmly to him and trying to explain why it wasn't safe for him to leave. I was greatly inspired by how she treated this patient. We work on a floor that is extremely busy and it's easy to forget that sometimes we all need to stop and take a deep breath and talk to our patients. I felt this approach to this situation helped the patient stay calm and more relaxed while still keeping him safe. I was extremely glad this nurse was working on this particular night. Aside from this nurse's impeccable bedside manner and way of communicating with patients, she is also one of the smartest nurses I know. I have had multiple situations where I've had complicated patients; and as a new nurse, I have been unsure how to proceed. Patricia is always there to help me either find a policy to guide me in the right direction, or help me troubleshoot any problem that may arise. I feel this nurse always has patient safety, comfort, and quality of care as her top priorities.
