In performance of her job duties, Paula calls patients on the telephone to perform assessments of patients. Recently Paula assessed a patient on the phone that was having a planned cataract removal. During the assessment, Paula extracted from this patient that he was using Heroin on a daily basis. Paula contacted Crisis Care through our facility, who referred her to "Project Cure." Paula called Project Cure, who could not understand why a nurse was calling them on behalf of a patient. After speaking with them, Paula was able to get the patient an appointment, which he kept, and has been able to eliminate his Heroin use through a prescribed Methadone treatment course. Paula was also able to secure the patient an appointment with Cardiology for clearance for his surgery. The effort Paula put forth for this patient very likely saved his life.
