In the NICU, Lane encounters many parents who feel overwhelmed by their child’s condition. She understands the importance of fully communicating all aspects of care she and her team are providing, while being mindful of their delicate emotional state.
It came as no surprise to her fellow nurses when Lane volunteered to help the mother of a patient in the PICU who was having a hard time understanding the Spanish interpreter. During the 60 days that the child was a patient, Lane made herself available to the mom—whether she needed to explain what the nursing staff was doing, update her of status changes or encourage her to take some time to eat, Lane was there. She connected with the mother, who would have been lost otherwise.
Lane provided the same level of care to this family as she would to her own patient, which is indicative of the type of nurse and genuinely caring person she is.
