A few months ago a middle-aged man came to the Emergency Department with chest pain. He had not wanted to come in because he was leaving on a cruise the next morning. His very worried wife encouraged him to be seen. His initial EKG was abnormal and right away we knew that he would need to be transferred to another hospital for intervention. The man was calm while Josh efficiently took care of him, but what struck me the most was the care and concern Josh also gave to the anxious wife. He explained everything that was happening and on multiple occasions he gave her verbal assurance and comfort. This couple truly bonded with Josh in the short time they were here. They trusted him and felt safe in his capable hands. Josh was with them each step of the way and attended to every need the patient and family had. A few days later the couple returned to thank us for helping them at such a critical time. They shared with us what a special nurse Josh was for them and what a pleasant ER experience they had. I know he would say he was just "doing his job", but Josh truly exemplifies the mission of Placentia Linda Hospital. He gave quality care with a personal touch.

A couple of weeks later a similar situation unfolded. Another man with chest pain presented while Josh was on. After this man's EKG was done Josh recognized right away that it was an evolving heart attack. His clinical experience and expertise elevated the situation to one of priority and importance. He was a true leader that day collaborating with and leading the entire team to treat this patient. He saved this man's life by not only recognizing the critical state he was in but also acting quickly to intervene.

A small child was brought in by her father after a traumatic accident at home. We had no warning that they were coming in. Imagine the scene of a frantic father running into our lobby with the limp child in his arms, handing her over to Josh. He rushed her back to a bed whispering under his breath, "Lord, please be with us". Josh never left that child. He did compressions on the tiny chest for what seemed like hours. When someone would offer to take over so he could rest, he declined. He was focused on doing whatever he could to keep her alive. His leadership abilities were again exhibited in this situation as well. He would call out what was needed and directed staff when the next medication was to be administered. I'm sure he was just as scared as the rest of us but his calm demeanor went a long way to comfort a very chaotic situation. He was attentive to the family for hours afterwards when the child was unable to be saved. Josh was also instrumental in caring for the emotional needs of the staff. He talked with each staff member one by one asking if they were ok and if he could do anything to help. That was a difficult day for everyone involved but having Josh there was a blessing to all.

"Josh is respectful of each patient he cares for".
"He goes out of his way to make each patient comfortable and explains each procedure to them so they will understand".
"Whenever I thank Josh, he always answers, "my pleasure". Such a genuine person he is".
"He can often be heard behind the curtain soothing a frightened patient with his warm comforting voice".
