Mary is an outstanding nurse, who consistently goes above and beyond for her patients. She has exceptional assessment skills, and a keen intuition when it comes to patient's needs. Mary has a very poised, professional, yet quiet demeanor, but she is very effective in communicating with her patients, families and all members of the health care team. Mary consistently demonstrates our Service Excellence Standards. She develops a wonderful rapport with her patients and families. She has a very calm, nonthreatening demeanor, and people immediately connect with her. She is often recognized by her patients as the nurse that made a positive impact on their experience.
Recently, Mary demonstrated her keen intuition when it comes to patients, and her ability to communicate effectively with other members of the healthcare team, by advocating for a baby who had gone through a difficult delivery. Mary had received a new mom and baby admission mid-afternoon. The baby was a breech presentation that was delivered vaginally with forceps assistance. When Mary received the baby, it was bruised on the chest, arms and legs, and it's head was asymmetrical. All vital signs and other system assessments were normal, but Mary was concerned particularly about the baby's head. The physician came in a short time later and was in the hallway between the Well Baby Nursery and the NICU looking at charts and preparing to do exams on new babies. Mary gave him this baby's name and asked him if he was going to examine them, and he told her "no." Mary wheeled the baby over to where he was in the hall and gave a brief SBAR of this baby's difficult delivery. She told him she was concerned about the baby's head and asked that the physician look at the baby. Mary was able to communicate her concerns in such a manner, that the physician did stop and examine the baby's head. This baby did end up transferring to Nationwide Children's for further evaluation and treatment.
