Devin has been a nurse for a little over four months on 10E. In that short amount of time Devin has left a remarkable impression on patients and staff. He truly embodies UPMC's core values. On Dec. 15, Devin's patient was discharged home. The patient forgot to take his home medications with him and unfortunately Devin was unable to stop the patient before he left. Devin took it upon himself to collect the patient's home medications and personally deliver them to the patient's residence on his way home from working a 12 hour shift.
Devin has received multiple 'above and beyond' recognitions for his caring and compassionate demeanor, his knowledge and skillset, and his passion for patient care. Multiple staff members from different disciplines have also taken notice to his ability to provide quality patient care, his willingness to help others, and determination for patient safety.
Devin establishes therapeutic and trusting connections with patients each and every time he works. He is often seen checking on patients who he may not be assigned to, but had previously. A patient of Devin's wrote: "He was always so kind and caring. Devin always asked me how I was doing and feeling and if I needed anything. Even when I was not his assigned patient, Devin would stop by and see how I was doing and talk with me. I wish all nurses were like Devin and I am grateful for all that he did for me".
Devin always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face when he comes to work, which is sometimes difficult to maintain working on a progressive medical unit. He collaborates with other staff members to meet the needs of the patients, even if that means caring for a patient that is not assigned to him. Devin's transition into the nursing field has been flawless. Devin is a godsend to UPMC Mercy, 10E, and the overall nursing profession. He is an inspiration and role model to other healthcare providers.
These acts of kindness, compassion, and excellence in patient care should be recognized, as it sets Devin apart from others, which then sets Mercy apart from other hospitals.
