I was a patient hospitalized in early 2014 for a severe gangrene infection. I am fortunate to be alive since my infection was septic and required extensive debridment. I had 10 surgeries and spent five and a half months in the burn unit ICU of the hospital. I am very fortunate to be treated and taken care of by the burn unit nurses. They are an exceptional staff of nurses. I would like to especially recognize Naiwei. Naiwei is a very caring person who goes out of her way in providing exceptional care to her patients. She routinely did things above and beyond her duties. She made sure my doctor was aware of my condition and recommended the appropriate wound care. Even though she was normally not my assigned nurse, she would personally review the condition of my wound during dressing changes to provide her expert opinion to the doctor on the best course of treatment. She also did most of my difficult wound vacuum applications and trained most of the other nurses. She would spend the extra time on me and never made me wait by deferring to other nurses whenever she knows I needed help eating, getting in and out of bed, or showering. Even after leaving the hospital 6 months ago, Naiwei still reviews my wound photos daily on her own time to make sure I am making good progress. She also personally inspected and assessed my wound on a few occasions. She is very interested in making sure my wound heals completely even after I was discharged from the hospital. Naiwei also is a very tireless and dedicated worker who put in multiple extra 12-hour shifts during a time in early 2014 when the bum unit was extremely short staffed. I have seen her work 7 to 8 successive days with no time off. In summary, I am very fortunate to have been treated by Naiwei. She is an excellent nurse who teaches by example and has fostered team work in a very close knit nursing staff.
Note: This is Naiwei's second DAISY Award!
