I had the privilege of starting my OB nursing career right alongside of Lauren Rose. We quickly became great friends but I had no clue at the time she would become one of my role models. Lauren has done amazing things for our unit. She helped create our computer charting system and worked many long hours helping it go live. She is a remarkable relief charge nurse, a fantastic resource and could actually be nominated for many reasons.
This year has been very tragic for Lauren. She was pregnant with her third child and tragically lost her beautiful baby boy at full term. Lauren was so nervous about coming back to work and giving great care to our patients. Just as Lauren does everything, she had a seamless transition back to work. The reason I am writing this today is because of the remarkable care she gave to one of our long term patients just a few weeks ago.
Our patient had been on our unit for 9+ weeks, knowing her baby boy would not live after birth due to congenital anomalies. Lauren went out of her way to take care of the patient every weekend. A couple of weeks ago that patient delivered (exactly 6 months after Lauren delivered her baby). Although Lauren was having a difficult time being at work that day, she not only volunteered to take care of that patient, but like classic Lauren, she did an absolutely beautiful job with this grieving family.
This was the time Lauren had her first therapeutic conversation with a patient about the grief process. Lauren told her patient she would probably cry as she shared this very personal story with them. She shared her story, talked about how she's recovering, and they all cried together.
If anyone is deserving of a DAISY Award, it is Lauren Rose, CBU nurse, Informatics nurse and beautiful spirit.
