I've been at UnityPoint Health/Peoria for over 30 years, and I've worked alongside some absolutely awesome nurses, so I know 'em when I see 'em. My sister-in-law was on 7C for 5 days and received very good care. She was battling end-stage COPD exacerbated by influenza and pneumonia. About 9:00 on Friday evening I got a call from Jacqueline - they were in the midst of an RRT on Molly and her condition was deteriorating. When I arrived, the RRT was wrapping up and the bottom line was that if she was not intubated very soon, she would die. The whole family was willing to honor her wishes that she not be intubated, but of course, when the time comes, the discussion needs to be re-visited. Jacqueline was so good with my sister-in-law, having an incredibly authentic and hard conversation explaining intubation and that the alternative was death. This was made more difficult because of the bi-pap which made it impossible to hear what my sister-in-law was trying to say, so it had to be removed for every word, and then replaced. Jacqueline was patient and compassionate during that process, while making sure that the direction change was clear to all. Once the decision was made, Jacqueline was like a dog with a bone getting orders from the doctor and getting care transferred to the palliative care provider. Once she got orders, she was inexperienced with the process of weaning the bi-pap while keeping the patient comfortable since every breath was a tortured struggle. So she marched over to 7 Ham to get wisdom from their nurses. And the process began. It seemed effortless. Although she had a full load of patients, she was never not available to us throughout the night. Jacqueline was so solicitous of the family and from time to time had tears in her eyes as she felt the grief we were experiencing. There were hugs for all as she left her shift. And she had everything queued up for the oncoming nurse. 7C staff were just great.
