My mother wished to write to you about the daytime nurse she had the last two days at TMC, Rachel Lara. I think she felt Rachel was her own personal superhero. She always showed up when Mom needed her and provided prompt care. Mom never had to wait long after hitting the call button. Rachel also had a warm, pleasant demeanor and just the right touch of humor. When my mother stood up to get onto the transport gurney as she was being moved to Peppi's house, she realized she was much weaker than she expected. Rachel had my mother give her a hug around her neck and she held her tight as she helped her into the gurney. Once she was settled, Rachel said, "Wasn't that the best dance ever?" I will never forget that memory.
While my mother wished to write this letter, she was not able to do so. She passed away about 12 hours after she arrived at Peppi's house. I am writing this letter for her, but also for me. I am so grateful to Rachel and many others at TMC. They made the last few days of my mother's life better. She was facing her own mortality, struggling with every moment to breathe and trying to keep up a strong front for her family. The staff's gentleness, smiles and generous, loving care made that struggler easier for her.
