Karen excels as a preceptor and takes extra time at home to find articles, pneumonics or anything that will help a new or current RN succeed in Critical Care. She constantly looks for something to challenge herself professionally and then tries to help and pass on that knowledge while training others. She always takes her time, is very thorough and patient.
Among so many different patients Karen has advocated for one in particular recently sticks out in our mind. It was a post-operative open heart patient who was depressed. He stated that he sat around on the couch for almost 5 years. Karen fought for this patient's mental well-being and with a team effort this patient was placed on antidepressants. When the patient was discharged the patient's wife said to Karen,"Thank you for giving me my husband back".
This was just one example out of many where Karen has gone above and beyond for her patients.
