Marty Montano is a great leader as PCC for the pediatric department. She is very talented and skilled in her ways as a manager. She knows how to get to know her staff's weaknesses and strengths and incorporate them into the work environment. She creates an environment where attributes of trust, compassion, mutual respect, continued professional development and ethical behavior are modeled and supported. She is always in the unit ready to help with procedures, family concerns and lunches; all which we have on a daily basis.
A single phone call and she is there. She will come in on days off if the unit is short and never complains. When Marty comes in, she is ready to make things better. She has been known on several occasions to provide breakfast or lunch on days when she is not even scheduled to work. She will come in and set up a wonderful display of food, stay for people to take a break and then clean up before going home. Many staff know, it is rare to get a true 30-minute break, but Marty makes it a priority for her staff to sit and break for lunch. Staff knows she keeps an open door policy and she motivates them with a shared vision to achieve better outcomes for their patients.
Marty engages new staff in patient care, serves as a mentor, makes sure they are taken care of, and are made to feel as part of the UHS family team. She utilizes the skills of each team member to enhance productivity and always makes a point to verbalize staff recognition. Marty has made sure to grow as a leader and has added to her skill level with management courses, such as ECHO team member, CRRT courses, and even received her Certified Pediatric Nurses certification. She is well respected by the Pediatric attendings and medical staff of all other services as she is very professional in her communication with them; they know they can count on her to get things done.
Marty is responsive to the needs of others, always encouraging critical thinking and problem solving for the context of the team. Marty also takes time to promote the image of nursing within the community by attending events that promote the vision of UHS and Children's Health that are usually held on the weekends, which she attends when she is off to inform the community of the services we provide.
Things go smoother when Marty is around and when she is not there she is just a phone call away. Her role as PCC is very challenging and she does it with a great attitude and a serving heart.
