Kelly has always been an exceptional RN. She is caring and compassionate not only to the patients but to their families as well as her coworkers. Kelly and I work in the NSICU together and we get our fair share of sad cases. Most of our patients don't have good outcomes and recovery is very slow and painful for both the family and the patients. Especially when we have young patients. Currently we have a very young mother of two that had a ruptured aneurysm followed by a stroke. She is totally locking in her own mind due to her aphasia. Today the patient seemed more tearful and frustrated. She has been in the NSICU for 17 days and the end is nowhere in sight. It was a beautiful sunny fall day. Kelly loaded up the patient in a wheelchair, IV pumps and foley included and wheeled her outside to let her sit in the sunshine. Not only did she help relieve her sensory deprivation she let her feel normal for a little while again. Kelly said that when she got outside she smiled and leaned her head back to soak up all the warm sunshine. After Kelly took her outside she also took her into the gift shop and let her pick out some magazines to look at while she was back in her room. Kelly didn't act like what she was doing was a huge deal, but she knew what it meant to the patient. It is inspiring to see Kelly at work. It makes us all want to be better for ourselves and our patients.
