The DAISY Award recipient is any Baptist Health nurse that exemplifies the kind of nurse that patients and families, as well as our staff and colleagues, recognize as an outstanding role model. These nurses consistently demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise and extraordinary, compassionate care.
The emergency room environment is uniquely different than any other department of Wolfson Children's Hospital. Because of the pace and flow design, the ED nurse has only a few minutes to make a connection, while at the same time attending to the urgency of the need of the child. This takes a distinctly different type of nurse who can walk into a room and immediately jump into action, yet make sure the parents fully understand what is going on. Abby Dewitt is one of those nurses.
It is easy to focus on the obvious, but Abby sees all pieces of the situation. She possesses the skills required for the provision of excellent clinical care, but beyond that, she is keenly in tune with the parents of her patients. She has worked at Clay ED, Town center ED, and the Wolfson CEC downtown. All three places she has managed the patient load without ever complaining about it. She is compassionate, hard-working, and caring.
Recently, a young child brought in for mental health care, left the unit and Abigail followed her out of the hospital and convinced her that she would contact her grandmother who was the only person the child trusted. She brought her back safely to the department to receive the care she needed. Abby is an extraordinary pediatric Nurse. I wholeheartedly support her nomination for the DAISY Award.
Abby, thank you for sharing your many gifts with us at Wolfson; congratulations, you make us proud!
