Katie is a nurse who consistently goes above and beyond for her patients, families, and teammates. Katie is a nurse who comes in with a smile on her face no matter what her assignment is.
I think an outstanding example of the kind of nurse Katie is was one day when I was covering for a nurse's lunch break and she happened to be one of the neighbor nurses in a fairly busy assignment herself. She walked into this baby's room just to say hello to the baby who was alone and said, "This baby needs a tub bath; he has never had one, and I think he would love it." Instead of passing that information on to the patient's nurse, she went and got the tub and bath supplies and took the time to bathe and dress this little baby. It was so very sweet not only to the patient but also to help her neighbor out in that way.
Katie consistently does things like this for not only her patients but also for patients she is not assigned to on the unit. She walks in and talks to kiddos who happen to be alone, she walks around and asks how she can help. I have had her approach me and let me know that she can gladly take another patient. This is not something nurses often do. Overall, I think Katie fully embodies nursing excellence, and I am so grateful she chose to join our PICU team.
