Amber recently took care of a patient who had a difficult stay on our unit. Due to an acute illness and an exceptionally lengthy hospital stay, the patient developed a heightened level of anxiety and had expressed concerns. As I walked into the patient's room, I observed Amber kneeling at the bedside, holding her hand and reassuring the patient and family. Although Amber had many responsibilities, she stopped for that moment and connected with the patient. Her extreme compassion at a time when it would have been easy to be impatient is indicative of what the DAISY Award represents. Her selfless act of encouragement and her own courage to face the situation with an open mind is a direct reflection on Novant Health's mission, vision, and values.
