A patient's son nominated Dermot because of the "exemplary compassion, sensitivity and medical expertise" he displayed in taking care of his father. In the nomination, the son wrote how impressed he was with Dermot's ability to tend to several patients nearly simultaneously. The son wrote that Dermot is "direct, informative, understanding and thorough and more than deserving of the DAISY Award."
