Marty cared for a patient who was diagnosed with Leukemia at 26 weeks gestation. Due to the patient's religion, she refused all blood and blood products. Marty was extremely supportive of the decisions the patient made during her hospital stay. One week before the patient's death, the patient told Marty that she was not going back to the doctor because she had no transportation. Marty drove to Hickory, and not only did she take her to the doctor, but took her to the beauty shop to have her hair done. Once the baby was delivered, the patient was transferred to a different unit for hospice care. Her health stabilized and she was able to visit her baby in the NICU. Marty visited the patient every day, even on her days off. After the patient was discharged, Marty continued to visit the patient at her home in Hickory. The bond between the patient, her family and Marty was phenomenal. The patient died several days after her baby was discharged home from the hospital. Marty attended the funeral and continues to keep in touch with the patient's family.
Thank you, Marty for your extraordinary compassion and caring!
