I was a surgical patient for one week, and overall, the nursing care I received was very good, but one nurse in particular, Dolores Blauth, stands out, for a variety of reasons.
First of all, you should know that I am an R.N. and so I am very "picky" about my care in the hospital!
I first met Dolores as a "fresh post-op" patient. I remember waking up after a longer than expected surgery feeling somewhat confused, weak, and frightened, as well as in pain. Dolores appeared at my bedside and immediately I was impressed by her engaging personality and upbeat attitude. She wasted no time in getting me up walking that evening and I didn't mind it, as she chatted with me the whole time!
Before she got me up, however, Dolores also took the time to keep me warm with extra blankets, and she even washed my back with warm water, which helped me relax! (Good old fashioned nursing care which I thought had been lost in our high tech world!)
Dolores is also an excellent teacher. In addition to showing me how to use my morphine pump appropriately, I also observed her teaching a new nurse's aid, with extreme patience and perseverance.
