A St. John employee nominiated Sarah for a DAISY Award:

My 13 year old daughter suffered a fractured dislocation of her elbow last night while at gymnastics practice. I would like to recognize the RN that took care of her. Sarah was not originally assigned to my daughter but passed by frequently in the first 30 minutes we were there. My daughter was so scared and in so much pain. It seemed to take a long time in the beginning to get the initial "work" done. At about the 30 minute mark, Sarah came into the room. She told my daughter "I just can't stand to see you so scared and I wanted to come and help you".

My daughter immediately stopped crying and for the first time started to listen and follow directions. Sarah immediately made a connection with my daughter that put her at ease. Sarah was able to get more pain medication for my daughter, which helped her relax even more. Through the whole experience she treated my daughter as a partner in her care. Sarah asked her questions and spoke to her directly instead of asking me and my husband all the questions. My daughter had so many questions, and asked the same questions over and over and over. Sarah took the time to answer those questions every time with sincerity, compassion, and without any frustration. It was so busy in the ER that night but you never would have known it the way Sarah made time for us.

As they prepared to reset her elbow and talked about sedation, my daughter asked "would you please stay with me because I really trust you". What an amazing statement by a teenager, to really trust a person that you do not know to stay with you when your parents can't. That spoke volumes about the connection that Sarah had established with her. Sarah did stay with my daughter the entire time and when my daughter woke up she thanked her right away telling her that she made her feel so comfortable.

As a nurse, I know Sarah did not take a break that night in part because she made such a strong connection with my daughter that could not be broken. We cannot thank Sarah enough for her kindness and support throughout this difficult time. She is a true example of the values of St. John Providence by providing spiritually center, holistic, patient centered care.

Sarah really made a difference in the life of my daughter and the experience would not have been the same if she did not step into our room that night.
