As I sit here to write this blurb about my extended stay at St Joes North - tears fill my eyes. I realize that the DAISY award is a nomination for exceptional nurse service, empathy, compassion, and understanding. I would like to share the journey of bringing my son into this world with you and the exceptional nurse that made this experience beyond exceptional.
A little bit of background, I came into St Joes North on Monday - thinking I was going to be sent home. Instead, I was told that I was having a baby today, and it would be in the next few hours. Emotions filled my mind as I comprehended being rushed into the OR for my first c-section.
Having never had a c-section, or any major surgery for that matter, I was not sure what to expect. I was greeted in the OR by a plethora of people, but one, in particular, made sure to introduce herself and express her position there. Kim Scanlon was in the OR from the mother baby unit and introduced herself right away. Kim explained her position in the surgery and that she was there for me and my baby. She would be MY nurse and be with me the entire time. To someone who has never experienced what they were about to endure, that was more than reassuring to hear. Kim lived up to her words and not once left my side. My c-section was nothing close to a "textbook procedure" and through every bump of the experience, Kim was there by my side, and soon, by my new baby's side. The complications of my surgery proved to be very challenging, and Kim emotionally, physically, and vocally assured me and my significant other that everything would be taken care of and she was there until the end. Kim lived up to her words; she stayed with us through the recovery process, personally brought us to the mother and baby floor, and provided around the clock empathetic care for not only myself, but my baby, and significant other. I won't get into specifics about my surgery complications or the experience, rather just say that Kim witnessed it all (from a professional perspective) and made sure that my recovery and well-being were a top priority for her entire shift.
Kim made the first day of this life-changing experience unforgettable, for any and every positive way she could. The entire staff here has been professional, kind, and welcoming; but when it comes to superior, Kim is top of the line. Thanks for making the first day of my stay so warm and memorable!
